Turbochargers spin at up to 150,000 rpm! Did you know that inertia keeps the turbo spinning even after you switch the engine off? A hot shutdown is one of the top reasons behind turbocharger failure. The turbocharger is very hot and still spinning, with no oil supply to lubricate or to cool down the turbo, this is the number one cause of turbocharger bearing failure.
Therefore it is always good practice to let the engine run at idle for a few minutes prior to engine shut down, your turbocharger will appreciate it.
