Crankshaft Seals
The crankshaft seal is the primary barrier that keeps oil from leaking from the rear or front end of the crankshaft. Over time, crankshaft seals can dry out, break, or wear a groove into the crankshaft, allowing oil to leak.
Some CTP crankshaft seals come with a steel wear sleeve which creates a new surface for the seal. These seals/sleeves combination is pressed on the crankshaft at the same time, specialty tools are required for the installation. Many new seals are PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) type. PTFE seals provide low friction sealing with minimal oil lubrication requirement.
PTFE Installation tips:
- To protect the seal from dust and other contamination, only remove the seal from the protective packaging at the time of installation.
- The sealing lip of a PTFE oil seal is protected by a plastic sleeve, which sometimes can be used as an assembly aid. The sleeve protective sleeve must remain in place until the seal has been installed.
- Both the PTFE sealing lip and the shaft surface must be completely dry. Do not use any grease or oil.
- The shaft surface must be in a perfect condition in order to have a good running seal surface. Do not start the engine sooner than a couple of hours after installation, this allows the new sealing lip to adapt properly to the shaft.
Caution: If the sealing surface has a wear groove, the seal lip of the new seal should not run in the same position as the old seal.
CTP Crankshaft Seals are packed with a special anti-rust paper that extends the shelf life of the seal.
